Activists have long suspected that the administration of US President Donald Trump is gathering information from the Canary Mission website to target students and professors.

Heba Gowayed, a sociology professor at the City University of New York (CUNY), said the government’s reliance on an online blacklist that posts personal information to harm and intimidate activists is “absurd and fascist”.

“Canary Mission is a doxxing website that specifically targets people for language that they deem to be pro-Palestinian and therefore, they’ve decided, is anti-Semitic. Its sole purpose is to target and harass people,” Gowayed told Al Jazeera.

As demonstrations opposing the Israeli atrocities in Gaza swept college campuses last year, Israel’s advocates portrayed the protest movement as anti-Semitic and a threat to the safety of Jewish students.

While activists pushed back against the accusations, saying that the protests were aimed at combatting human rights abuses against Palestinians, conservative leaders called to crush the demonstrations and penalise the participants.

Shortly after returning to the White House in January, Trump himself signed a series of executive orders that laid the groundwork for targeting non-citizens who took part in the student protests for deportation.

In March, Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil — a permanent resident married to a US citizen — became the first prominent victim of Trump’s campaign.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio invoked a seldom-used provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act to order Khalil’s removal, on the basis that the Columbia student’s presence has “adverse” effects on American foreign policy.

After Khalil, many other students were detained by immigration authorities. Some left the country voluntarily to avoid imprisonment. Others, like Khalil, continue to fight their deportation.

Free speech advocates decried the campaign as a blatant violation of constitutionally protected freedoms.

The State Department did not respond to Al Jazeera’s query on the government’s use of Canary Mission. Instead, a department spokesperson referred to a statement by Secretary of State Rubio from May.

“The bottom line is, if you’re coming here to stir up trouble on our campuses, we will deny you a visa. And if you have a visa, and we find you, we will revoke it,” it said.

DHS did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.

But the Trump administration may also be using more extreme sources than Canary Mission to deport students.

At Wednesday’s court hearing, Hatch was asked about other sources the government is using. He replied that there was one other website he could not recall.

The court asked Hatch if it might be Betar, a far-right, Islamophobic group with links to the violent Kahanist movement in Israel.

According to transcripts, Hatch replied, “That sounds right.”

Gowayed, the City University of New York professor, called the government’s approach an “egregious overstep and distortion of any kind of notion of justice or legality.

Pro-Palestinian protests outside White House ahead of Netanyahu visit | The Jerusalem Post https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/pro-palestinian-protests-outside-white-house-ahead-of-netanyahu-visit-the-jerusalem-post/ https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/pro-palestinian-protests-outside-white-house-ahead-of-netanyahu-visit-the-jerusalem-post/#respond Tue, 08 Jul 2025 00:48:53 +0000 https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/pro-palestinian-protests-outside-white-house-ahead-of-netanyahu-visit-the-jerusalem-post/ Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the White House on Sunday and Monday ahead of Prime Minister Netanyahu's meeting with President Trump on Monday evening.

The main protests were coordinated by the Palestinian Youth Movement and the Party for Socialism and Liberation, but other participating groups included the Muslim American Society, American Muslims for Palestine and Jewish Voices for Peace.

It also parroted antisemitic and anti-Western conspiracy theories about Jewish elites oppressing the working classes: "the American imperialist and Zionist ruling class starve and kill our people and threaten to drag working people across the world into a massively unpopular regional war."
"Capitulation to US interests and normalization with Israel will not bring peace nor prosperity to the region, and we know that every time a Zionist figure visits the US empire, these forces collude to escalate the suffering and oppression of our people," it added.

American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), in collaboration with CODEPINK, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), and the US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), also held a press conference at 10 am condemning Netanyahu’s visit and calling for an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire."

Notably, Elias Rodriguez, the man who killed two Israeli embassy workers in Washington, DC in May, claimed to be a member of PSL.

The group itself released a statement following the attack, saying it rejects "any attempt to associate the PSL with the DC shooting."

At least 61 people have been killed in Gaza today by Israeli attacks across the enclave.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says Israel will send negotiators to Qatar for ceasefire talks, but that changes to the deal requested by Hamas are “unacceptable”.

At least five more killed in Gaza City as Israeli attacks continue
A source at al-Ahli Arab Hospital tells Al Jazeera that five Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli attack on al-Rimal neighbourhood, in the west of Gaza City.

At least 39 other people have been killed by Israeli attacks on the city just today.

Charities urge shutdown of US- and Israel-backed Gaza aid group https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/charities-urge-shutdown-of-us-and-israel-backed-gaza-aid-group/ https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/charities-urge-shutdown-of-us-and-israel-backed-gaza-aid-group/#respond Tue, 01 Jul 2025 16:24:30 +0000 https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/charities-urge-shutdown-of-us-and-israel-backed-gaza-aid-group/ More than 130 humanitarian organisations, including Oxfam, Save the Children and Amnesty International, have demanded the immediate closure of the Israeli- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), accusing it of facilitating attacks on starving Palestinians.

In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the NGOs said Israeli forces and armed groups “routinely” open fire on civilians attempting to access food.

“Palestinians in Gaza face an impossible choice: starve or risk being shot while trying desperately to reach food to feed their families,” the statement said. “Orphaned children and caregivers are among the dead, with children harmed in over half of the attacks on civilians at these sites.”

Speaking to Al Jazeera from Gaza City, Palestinian civil society leader Amjad Shawa said the aid mechanism is not providing sufficient supplies for hungry families, and also pressures people to move towards southern Gaza.

“They are delivering tiny portions of food – a few energy bars, some oil, rice, and flour – barely enough to last two or three days,” he said. “This isn’t a proper meal. It risks deepening malnutrition in Gaza.”

Shawa argued that positioning the GHF distribution points mainly in southern and eastern Gaza reflects a deliberate strategy to drive people out of the north, aligning with wider Israeli military objectives. “It’s a calculated effort to push Palestinians further south,” he said.

Meanwhile, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan said on Monday that there had been no contact from Israel for weeks. “We are determined to seek a ceasefire that will save our people, and we are working with mediators to open the crossings,” he said.

Among the dead was journalist Ismail Abu Hatab, as well as women and children who had gathered at the cafe.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said more than 220 journalists had been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023.

As Gaza starves, GoFundMe accused of blocking ‘millions of dollars’ raised https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/as-gaza-starves-gofundme-accused-of-blocking-millions-of-dollars-raised/ https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/as-gaza-starves-gofundme-accused-of-blocking-millions-of-dollars-raised/#respond Thu, 26 Jun 2025 15:47:28 +0000 https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/as-gaza-starves-gofundme-accused-of-blocking-millions-of-dollars-raised/ GoFundMe has been accused of blocking “millions of dollars” of life-saving aid from reaching Gaza.

Charity leaders, activists and desperate Palestinians in Gaza have condemned the crowdfunding website for shutting down or blocking withdrawals for Palestine-related fundraising pages – and have accused bosses of having “blood on their hands”.

Despite questions from Al Jazeera, the company has not revealed the amount of money raised on its platform for Gaza that has been frozen in its system or has been refunded to donors.

The London-based NGO-sector worker described the closure of her GoFundMe page as a “disaster” for her group’s efforts to provide emergency aid in the enclave.

The Sameer Project runs a camp for displaced people in Deir el-Balah, providing healthcare and essentials to its residents – paid for by money that, until now, had been raised through GoFundMe, totalling more than $1m. It also funds food, water, shelter and clothing for people across Gaza.

GoFundMe has refused to disclose figures that show how many Israel or Ukraine fundraisers have been closed compared with those for Gaza.

The company’s long and intrusive review process often results in Gaza fundraisers being shut down and money refunded to donors or pages being “paused”, preventing funds from being accessed by account holders until the review is concluded.

One United States-based fundraiser for the Sulala animal shelter in Gaza says it had about $50,000 dollars refunded to donors when its first page was closed. The team behind the fundraiser then created another page without specifically mentioning Gaza or Palestine, which was not flagged by GoFundMe, placed under review or paused, and ran for months uninterrupted.

Crowdfunding websites have for months been one of the only feasible ways to help those trapped in Gaza.

Famine is creeping further into the enclave, humanitarian aid is being blocked for long periods, civilian infrastructure lies in ruin and banks and ATMs have either been destroyed or have halted operations.

Sabbah slammed GoFundMe for not justifying shutting her page down despite the huge amount of money the company made from the group’s pages in”payment processing fees”. It charges 30 cents per donation and a 2.9 percent cut of the total raised.

‘Growing number’ of Britons view Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide: Poll https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/growing-number-of-britons-view-israels-actions-in-gaza-as-genocide-poll/ https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/growing-number-of-britons-view-israels-actions-in-gaza-as-genocide-poll/#respond Fri, 20 Jun 2025 16:30:42 +0000 https://istandwithpalestine.org/story/growing-number-of-britons-view-israels-actions-in-gaza-as-genocide-poll/ Most Britons who oppose Israel’s war on Gaza believe the onslaught, which has to date killed more than 55,000 people, amounts to genocide, according to a new poll.

The survey, carried out by YouGov and commissioned by the Action for Humanity charity and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) advocacy group, found that 55 percent of Britons are against Israel’s aggression. A significant number of those opponents – 82 percent – said Israel’s actions amount to genocide.

“The government’s failure to recognise the scale of the crimes being inflicted upon Gaza is not just putting them on the wrong side of history, it’s putting them on the wrong side of the present day.”

Tens of thousands of Britons have taken to the streets over the past 20 months to protest against Israel’s war on Gaza.

“UK policymaking should be based on complying with international law obligations, regardless, but this poll just goes to show the level of popular support for such policies too. There is absolutely no appetite to drag our national reputation through the mud by continuing to stand with a rogue, pariah state.”

Its president, Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, said the initiative represents a large-scale awakening involving international citizens to challenge Israel’s illegal maritime blockade.

MAPIM calls on the global community, including humanitarian organisations, trade unions, religious communities, students, artists, and governments from Global South countries, to contribute ships, crew, medical supplies, food and humanitarian solidarity.

An international coordination meeting will be held soon to begin the first phase of the 1000 Flotilla’s voyage within the next two months.

For further information on participation, contributions or organising regional meetings, the public can contact 019-4744856.

The attacks on Tuesday targeting Tehran, as well as locations Israel branded military bases in western Iran, came as United States President Donald Trump posted an ominous message warning residents of the capital to evacuate.

“Iran can not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump wrote on Monday as he returned to Washington early from a Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada. “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”
