Israel launches heavy bombardment on Gaza City as US says ceasefire holds

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to carry out “powerful” attacks in Gaza, his office says.
It comes after Netanyahu alleged Hamas committed a “clear violation” of the ceasefire deal. For its part, Gaza’s Government Media Office accused Israel of committing 125 violations of the ceasefire since it came into effect on October 10, including killing 94 Palestinians.
The sound of explosions and drones continues across Gaza despite the ceasefire: “It’s just a constant reminder of how fragile this ceasefire is,” Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reports from Gaza City.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 68,527 people and wounded 170,395 since it began in October 2023. A total of 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks and about 200 taken captive.

Israel says received Gaza hostage body from Red Cross

Israel said it had received on Monday the remains of another Gaza hostage handed over as part of a US-brokered ceasefire deal.

“Israel has received, through the Red Cross, the coffin of a missing hostage who was handed over to the [Israeli military] and Shin Bet forces inside the Gaza Strip,” a statement from the prime minister’s office said.
The military and Shin Bet later confirmed the remains were back in Israel, and were being sent to “the National Institute for Forensic Medicine, where identification procedures will be carried out.”

A senior Hamas official told AFP that the group’s armed wing had handed over the captive’s remains to the Red Cross after receiving them from the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades – the armed wing of the Marxist-Leninist movement the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

A statement from the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades said: “In fulfillment of our national responsibility, we… announce that we are handing over the body of one of the Zionist soldiers in implementation of the terms of the agreement.”

Prior to this handover, Hamas had returned 12 bodies of hostages to Israel, out of the 28 it had pledged to return as part of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

‘Growing number’ of Britons view Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide: Poll

Most Britons who oppose Israel’s war on Gaza believe the onslaught, which has to date killed more than 55,000 people, amounts to genocide, according to a new poll.

The survey, carried out by YouGov and commissioned by the Action for Humanity charity and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) advocacy group, found that 55 percent of Britons are against Israel’s aggression. A significant number of those opponents – 82 percent – said Israel’s actions amount to genocide.

“The government’s failure to recognise the scale of the crimes being inflicted upon Gaza is not just putting them on the wrong side of history, it’s putting them on the wrong side of the present day.”

Tens of thousands of Britons have taken to the streets over the past 20 months to protest against Israel’s war on Gaza.

“UK policymaking should be based on complying with international law obligations, regardless, but this poll just goes to show the level of popular support for such policies too. There is absolutely no appetite to drag our national reputation through the mud by continuing to stand with a rogue, pariah state.”

Israel appears to be expanding its air strikes on Iran’s capital, five days after it launched a surprise attack on its foe’s military and nuclear programme.

The attacks on Tuesday targeting Tehran, as well as locations Israel branded military bases in western Iran, came as United States President Donald Trump posted an ominous message warning residents of the capital to evacuate.

“Iran can not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump wrote on Monday as he returned to Washington early from a Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada. “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”
