Adel’s life took a tragic turn when he lost his leg. The physical pain, however, was only the beginning. Captured and tortured, he was subjected to brutal treatment that stripped him of his dignity.

The horrors Adel faced went beyond the battlefield. In captivity, he underwent 26 painful operations with little to no anesthesia. Medical treatment became another form of torture—his wounds were reopened with razor blades, and he was burned with cigarettes and lighters. The handcuffs turned his hands black, and the relentless abuse left him in excruciating pain.

Food and water were luxuries, withheld and used as tools for humiliation. He witnessed fellow prisoners succumb to heart failure and severe beatings. His captors even celebrated with barbecue parties near the prison cells, mocking those suffering inside.

A Dream of Safety and Belonging

Before the war, Adel and his father had a simple dream—to open a sweets shop. They worked hard, crafting treats that brought joy to their community. But as war engulfed Gaza, survival became the only dream.

When he finally returned to Gaza, the sight of his homeland overwhelmed him with emotion. He cried—not just for himself, but for the countless others who suffered the same fate. His greatest fear was realized when he thought his family had perished in the bombings. Miraculously, he found them alive, bringing a fleeting moment of relief in an otherwise devastating reality.

The Struggle of Adel Continues

Despite his suffering, Adel’s story is not just one of pain but of resilience. He, like many others in Gaza, dreams of a day when safety and security are not just distant hopes but tangible realities.

His words resonate deeply: “Every Gazan dreams of safety. Gaza has been dreaming of safety for a long time.” Yet, even amidst the despair, there remains a glimmer of hope—hope that one day, the people of Gaza will no longer have to fight for their right to live in peace.

Adel’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit, the will to endure, and the unyielding desire for dignity and freedom. His story deserves to be heard, not as a statistic of war but as a voice for all those who continue to suffer in silence.
