Several Jewish organizations staged a protest at Trump Tower in support of Mahmud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student and U.S. permanent resident facing deportation. Police arrested multiple demonstrators as dozens gathered inside the building, chanting slogans in support of Palestine.
Khalil, a 30-year-old student of international affairs, was a prominent organizer during last year’s Gaza war protests on campus. The U.S. government detained him, citing his activism, and is now attempting to deport him, a move that has sparked international outcry.
The case has ignited debates about free speech on college campuses and the legal grounds for deporting a U.S. permanent resident. Khalil, who was born in Syria and holds Algerian citizenship, has not been charged with any crimes. However, the Trump administration has accused pro-Palestinian activists, including Khalil, of supporting Hamas, a claim he denies.
The Jewish protesters at Trump Tower included activists and celebrities, such as actresses Susan Sarandon and Debra Winger, who voiced concerns over the suppression of student activism. Winger, a participant in the demonstration, described Khalil as a political prisoner and criticized the U.S. government’s actions. “He was abducted from his home with his eight-month pregnant wife. Does that sound like America?” Winger asked.
During the protest, police cleared the building’s lobby, arresting demonstrators who unfurled banners demanding Khalil’s release. Outside, a heavy police presence surrounded the area as onlookers and media gathered.
Khalil remains detained in Louisiana as his legal team fights for his return to New York. His supporters argue that his case represents a broader effort to silence pro-Palestinian voices. As protests continue, activists warn that Khalil’s arrest could set a dangerous precedent for free speech and student activism in the U.S.
